melons
How in the heck do you tell when watermelons are ripe? I followed my mother's advice of 'knock on it, it is supposed to sound like your hardwood floor'. So i have been knocking on these melons regularly, and recently one started sounding like my hardwood floor, kind of. So we excitedly picked it and cut it open.
It was nowhere near ripe.
So apparently i need further direction...

Beats me! I just buy whatever is in the grocery store, and trust that SOMEONE knew when they would be ripe!
I think the art of knowing when to pick a watermelon is definitely something that you learn from experience! I like to pick melons when the tendrils on the vine and the stem start to turn brown.
I always knock on them and listen for when they sound rather hollow and almost echo back. That seems to work for me.
(And if it's not quite ruby-red and sweet enough for you, just lay the cut portion flush on a plate and let it sit in the fridge for a day or so. Then try again.) :)
What exactly does a hardwood floor sound like, anyway?
